There is this GREAT scene where Joe Banks (Tom Hanks) needs some new luggage for his trip to a remote island (where he will be jumping into a volcano.)
Have you seen that old movie, Joe Versus the Volcano with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan?
The luggage salesman asks him:
“Have you thought much about luggage Mr. Banks?”
Tom Hanks says:
“No. I never really have.”
To which the luggage salesman replies:
“It is the central preoccupation of my life.”
This so hilarious, right, because who thinks about luggage that much?
But this man isn’t trying to be funny. He takes luggage very seriously.
Not to be too dramatic . . . but we are the luggage sales-women of writing.
Writing instruction, writing research, best practices for teaching writing, what works and doesn’t work, how to inspire kids to write, what to do when a kid won’t write, how to help a kid who writes all the time, how to best measure writing ability, what matters most when it comes to writing–these are topics that are the central preoccupation of our lives.
Who thinks about writing that much?
We do!
In the movie, Joe decides to trust the luggage salesman. And (without spoiling the movie for you!) that decision ends up being one of the best decisions of Joe’s life.
