Write A Letter To A Real-Life Soldier

letter to soldier

When I was growing up, my dad made huge efforts to take us kids to visit our Great Uncle Harold. He had a Purple Heart for his service during World War II, and we would sit on the little couch of his apartment while he told us , about his time as an American serviceman.

On Veterans Day, I (Carrie) think about Great Uncle Harold and also about my dad who wanted this to mean something to me.

It worked.

Do you have a way to honor Veterans Day with your kids?

We’ve got an idea we think you’ll like. It’s a (surprise surprise) letter writing activity I’ve done for years with my students. It comes from OPERATION GRATITUDE and is a simple way to write a letter of thanks to veterans, new recruits, currently deployed soldiers, and first responders.

We love this so much because not only does it give your family a way to honor American servicemen and women, it gives kids a REAL AUDIENCE for their writing. Writing a letter that is going to be delivered to a real-life soldier? Come on! That’s the best!

Here’s the LETTER WRITING GUIDE I use with my students.  It includes patriotic stationery, sentence starters, and an annotated example based on the letter guidelines from OPERATION GRATITUDE.

When you’re finished, fill out the donation form HERE. (You will need to keep scrolling a bit to find the LETTER donation section. It’s awesome to browse through the wish list though, in case your family wants to donate other items too!)

For easy reference, the address for the letters is:
Operation Gratitude
19748 Dearborn Street
Chatsworth, CA 91311

If you’re sending more than one, bundle them together instead of putting them in separate envelopes!

Also, if you’re writing with young writers, you might like these pages from Operation Gratitude. They still have lines for letter writing but also include a coloring page.

This simple activity can show our kids what my dad tried to

teach me with visits to Uncle Harold: soldiers deserve our thanks.

Writing is a way to express it!

WRITE ON!
