What We Say To Kids With Nothing To Write About

what we say to kids with nothing to write about

Do you ever think you have nothing to write about? Do your kids ever complain they have no ideas?

We get it as writers (this newsletter is two days late because I was trying to think of an idea) and we hear it from the kids we teach too.

But author Orson Scott Card says claiming we have nothing to write about is ridiculous.
Of course we have things to write about:
A thousand story ideas every day? Maybe.

Here are three from the past 12 hours I stopped to take a picture of.

Santa buying a Diet Coke at Walgreens:

A restaurant near my house on its umpteenth remodel:

And this skeleton with holiday lights. What?

Our message today is simple.

It’s such a busy busy month. Instead of adding more to your writing schedule, how about focusing on noticing stories you might otherwise walk past? Make it a game with your kids while you’re driving or shopping or waiting for a holiday concert to start. How many stories can you find?

This is what we call “living like a writer,” and it can be just as valuable to kids as pen to the page because it awakens the writer within. When you’re gathering up stories everywhere you go, writing isn’t something you have to do but something you can’t help but do.

See the difference there? 🙂

Start story lists. Write fast and joyfully. Let writing be a natural extension of the world around you.

Here’s to many story discoveries this week!
